Succeeding generations depend on us. We cannot rob them of their future.
—Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General, 12/12/07
"Sustainability" as a term can be traced to a 1987 United Nations conference where sustainable developments were defined as those that "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."
Green hotels, conference centers and sustainable businesses are part of an exploding trend in sustainable economic development. The physical limits of the earth, and the fact that we borrow these resources from our children and theirs, compel us to live in a more balanced fashion.
For tourism businesses, the definition applies to the community in which that business is located.
